Ben Muriuki’s parents died when he was in 10th grade, leaving him to raise his younger brother and sister. He did casual labor for $2/day. In 2006, he became the first of our College Scholars. He graduated Kenya Methodist University (KEMU) with degrees in Education and Biology. He was hired by the University as a counselor and student liaison, a position he now holds at another university. In this photo, Ben poses in front of KEMU’s Biology building, stones for which he hauled when he was a casual laborer.
